Hamsters

The kids were wanting a dog, we thought we would try out a small pet first. They each got their own hampster. The kids love them...in the day! At night they run on their wheel and scratch. They have gotten out several times. I would not recomend these as pets! :+)
Madison names hers Felicity.
Spencer named his Mr Lucky.
Logan & Aiden named theirs Joe.

Hamsters can fit through anything, they have tiny little bones and get be as flat as a pancake if they need to. We had a few growing up, their fur is so soft. We had rats too which are much more personable and they can't escape. They are faster and bigger and they can truly become like pets where they recognize you. I think they poop a lot more or bigger... I don't think they're as good a climbers as the hamsters so a habit-trail cage is not best for them. Their fur is nothing like a hamster's, not soft like that. But again, they make for pretty good pet alternatives to a cat or dog.

Myself, I like the mouse that sits on my desk. He's quiet and doesn't poop or eat. He's always around when I need him. That's my idea of a good pet!
